In parts of the (American) south, the tradition is to eat possum (and sometimes black eyed peas) on new years day, for luck. I live in the south, and have never tried it, but the name still sticks. Happy upcoming Possum Day, Y'all!

That started from people having possum on new years day as in the same way as you make a christmas dinner.
