lots of both really.

they can do experiments which are impossible to do on earth, due to gravity etc. Also a lot of things are developed from things that were first used in space programmes.

we learn about surround planets, well a bit more anyway..

no space programme.. no sat nav etc. (sattelites)

the cost is very expensive though in money in life etc (sadly)

it's also was seen as a race at the start between the US and Russia..

my favourite bit of trivia regarding it.. the US spent loads developing a pen that would work in space.. the Russians also had a device for such things.. a pencil.. development cost = zero.

but mankind has always had an interest, hence even the popularity of programmes like star wars / star trek..

but it's same with anything.. the internet was born from ARP net which the military used years before the public new about it.

I used to use the "internet" as it was so called at uni for email etc. before the world wide web was around.

Certainly the best advantage is learning. If we're going to survive as a species, we *need* to send people into space. Learning how to survive on minimal supplies, with limited amounts of energy has direct application to the people here on Earth - we're going to NEED to know how to do those things, especially with a population approaching 6.5 billion. Disadvantages - it's expensive. It's dangerous. It's hard on a person's life to leave the home they've known all their lives for months at a time on a space station.

A few years ago it was estimated that our knowledge would double every 10 Years. With the advancement of the computers it is estimated that it will double every 6 months. There are plenty of countries trying to catch up and we are being lazy and allowing them a chance. I know it is nearly impossible to stay on top even if U try. I was a network trouble shooter for NASA and went all over the world and it has ran off and left me in the dust. Of coarse at 77 years I am not as swift as I was. life will take care of that for U.

firs of all the NASA space program is a useless exercise in futility,

the black government, haas a secret space program with bases on the moon since the 6o ths, trips to mars and moon
are just for training purposes,

they actually workin jointly with some aliens species, interstellar travel is also routine by now,

mostly what they are doing now are monitoring alien bases and ships, and workin on more advanced ships, for interdimesinal travel and time travel witch have not yet been perfected, couse aliens themselves were stingy in sharing that technology but all its going well

My opinion is we are been a bit cheated here and conned.we all think they going to space and seeking life in other planets,and doing all these experiments,and we happy to pay taxes for supporting these programes,while in reality is just a veiled excuse to spy at each other ,between the two countries that have a well developed space programe.I may be wrong,but this is my opinion.

Advantages:
Exploring new frontiers..leading to colonization in the future which in turn will lead to new mineral sources being found on other planets and possibilities of expanding our current scientific knowledge to enhance our lifestyle. Striving for space dominance can also act as a catalyst for research and development.
Disadvantage:
Greater expenses, lesser results.
