This phrase is mostly related to jails , where a prisoner confides in another prisoner the details of the crime,which were hitherto unknown to the prosecutor,committed by him.Such detailing is mostly by way of boasting to the other one.The listener, then,passes on the information to the jail authorities to gain their favor. Such information is said to have been heard from a grapevine.
