and how did you maintain a balanced diet while pregnant

I am 21 weeks pregnant and do not eat any meat, however I do eat some dairy products, like cheese and milk. There are a lot of healthy alternatives to meat that allow vegetarians to maintain a healthy diet while pregnant. The problem with not eating meat is the lack of protein, which can be supplemented with beans, nuts, tofu, soy/regular cheese and milk. I drink Silk soy milk everyday and regularly eat foods with cheese, whole grains, and beans to make up for not eating any meat.

Most experts recommend 3 servings of protein daily for all pregnant women. Here is a link that lists the different types of foods (including vegetarian) and the amounts that count as a serving of protein:

Best wishes and take care!

Not even close... I can't think of a single meal I have had in the last 5 years that didn't have meat in it.

As for the balanced diet while pregnant question: There are many nutrients that the bodies need. Both the mother and the child will need the protein, iron etc that is found in meat, but there are substitutions. A vegetarian can get all the protein they need from eggs, beans, peanut butter, etc. And they can get iron from beans, nuts, asparagus, broccoli etc.

My soon to be sister-in-law is a vegetarian and is dieting so I try to help her maintain a balanced diet. It's not always easy with her, because she will also not eat fish or eggs but it is possible, with a little effort. Get online and research all the benefits of beef, chicken, fish and pork (the mainstay meats in most places) and then look for alternatives according to mineral or vitamin that you will not get from the meat. You can also find healthy living cookbooks for vegetarians, and there are many sites devoted to vegetarian diets for pregnant women. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help, but without knowing the specifics of your vegetarian diet, I can't give more specific help... Check out the following links, though... They should be helpful.

I do not support vegetarianism. However, my recommendation is to call around to different practitioners and find one that has some dietary expertise with vegetarians.

While some people thumbs downed one poster, the reality is that many vegetarians actually do have poor health as a result of malnutrition. If you are going to experiment on your fetus and/or child, at least find out how to do your diet as best as you can. Many of my sister's and cousin's health problems were the result of chronic lack of protein.

I am not and neither was my wife. I do know that most doctors reccommend that you skip the vegetarian diet if at all possible while you are pregnant because it is very difficult to get all the necessary protien, nurtients, and aminio acids necessary for the baby at this time. Since the baby is the most important thing, maybe this is something you should discuss with your M.D. and research.

I am veg.

If you have time please read why Paul McCartney became Vegetarian.
http://www.newveg.av.org/paul.htm

Paul McCartney ....
"Anyway, one day we were having Sunday lunch - we were still meat-eaters, just building a home with the kids and that - and Linda was a really good meat cook.

We were eating roast lamb for Sunday lunch and it was the lambing season and there were all these beautiful little lambs gambolling around.

Then we just looked at the lamb on our plate and looked at them outside again and thought "we're eating one of those little things that is gaily running around outside". It just struck us, and we said "Wait a minute maybe we don't want to do this".

And that was it, that was the big turning point and we said we'd give up meat."

I am not pregnant.

I eat both meat and vegetables, this is a balanced diet. More vegetables and less meat are good for the body. Fruits with Vitamin C are very necessary, and it should be taken everyday.

I am totally vegetarian. It depends upon yourself to control your food habits. It also depends upon your philosophy of life.I can't think of eating of someone else's flesh. If you are non-vegetarian you are still in the age of early man's era.How a civilised person can eat an animals body, this my thinking. So it depends upon yourself only.Human body is naturally a vegetarian body.
