of the spouses ? What rights and previleges are granted under the constitution for the spouses ? So far all presidents have been Men. So their wives were being called as First Ladys.

Is their being First Ladys just a formality fulfilled or there is some thing significant ?

They do not take the oath with their spouses. The wifes hold the Bible. Traditionally the First Lady has charities, public appearances and other duties...especially being beside their husbands. They have a secretary and an office, but nothing to do with running the government...although Hillary Clinton was a possible exception. Usually, if they need something passed they have to rely on their husbands to get the job done. Makes one wonder what a First Man will do. Twiddle his thumbs?
The wife of the President is the First Lady of the US. That's where the title came from.

It is symbolic, suggesting that when the President can handle the problems of his wife then the handling problems of the nation will be a childs work for him

it is a tradition, so that he may not do any wrong to the nation.
