I am puzzled by the meaning of Land of the Ascending Sun (Jpn).

They believed Japan was the first land awakened by the rising sun (or Land of the Ascending Sun). Because they only knew of China and Korea (the Three Kingdoms)... and since the sun rises in the east, Japan was the first to see it.

You know, the whole 'Japan is east of everything, and therefore is the Land of the Rising Sun' explanation was always good enough for me.
But then I went to Japan, and I began to wonder. Sunrise takes a very long time there. It starts around 4 am.
If you do not have heavy shades on your window, it seems like late morning by 5 am. The Japanese do not find this odd- it is normal to them.

So, yes, as it turns out there IS a physical difference between the way the sun ascends in Japan as opposed to the US.

I'm just not certain WHY. It could be that the large expanse of ocean to the east of Japan reflects a lot of pre-rise sunlight... I don't know.

no, just that the sun raises from the east but it set's in the west.
