I received a wifi dongle for christmas assuming that I could stick it into my mac and use the cable router to send out a wifi signal for my wii and psp. But the driver keeps saying that I require a wireless router, is there a way around this?

Here is the way it works.
You must have a Wireless Card in your computer. Depending on the Mac you have it should be equipped with an Airport Card or an Airport Extreme wirelss card pre Installed when you bought it.
Almost All Portables have them.
The Desktop Model's can be different and you may need to purchase the correct Airport Card for them like the iMac's
From there you must have a Wireless Router to get a Wireless Connection.
One form or another of any Wireless ROUTER, like the Airport Extreme Base Station. These are wireless ROUTERS. There are a ton of different manufactures of wireless routers and any will work the technology is the same worldwide. As long as you have the wireless card in your computer.

Wifi connections require 2 ends - your wifi dongle is one end, where is the other. It's like a phone, needs 2 people. Ask yourself the question "If my mac is talking, who is listening?". The usual answer is a wireless router. About $30 at Best Buy.
