that was a very good point Labsci made. I myself after watching I am legend laughed at how stupid it looked that people with rabies, having no rational thought could socially interact and get along within themselves, but tear everything else apart. what was even more irrational is that even the dogs that the infected people had would only turn against normal people and dogs. so dont let movies get to you

There are viral and bacterial diseases which cause swelling of the brain, lesions, etc. Leading to psychotic episodes, seizures, mood and personality changes. However, everyone will be affected differently. There is no disease or drug which can cause you to become psychotic, cannibalistic and violent, while retaining enough social ability to group together with other people affected in the same way.
This would be contradictory, and highly unlikely.
There would be psychotic violence within such a group such that it could not form any level of organisation.

Actually yes, have you ever heard of rabies?

The rabies virus attacks the central nervous system and the person infected gradually slides into insanity as the brain deteriorates. It makes humans just as violent and beastly as it does the animals it infects, i.e. dogs and cats.

Fortunately, it is very rare amongst humans, with only a few thousand cases reported annually worldwide.

we are beasts.

when i watch zombie-esque movies i tend to think these movies are more social commentary than scientifical. BUT if you really want to get into the possibility of "social breakdown" as a result of parasitic organisms, well there are many creepy-crawly things that can infect us and alter our behaviors: for a mild example (argueably) toxoplasmosis gondii infected crazy cat people...

furthermore, in the book Robert Neville is the "bad guy"
