Do you still go to the trouble of making those special things ? I used to make a gingerbread house every year, but stopped when my kids grew up. Now, I have a little grand-daughter and I've decided to start again...its uch fun and the kids love them. Do you still go to the trouble of making special foods, or does the freezer section at the grocery store seem more attractive these days?

I really hate to admit this.

I like fruitcake. There I've said it! Free at last!

Mom started me on the road to ruin when I was much younger. Now I go out of my way to find one that matches hers, I can't do it and I've tried. I can't find any commercial products that come close. But, I buy and eat them anyway.

Poor me, now I've got packs of candied cherries, and citrus rinds, and walnuts and other candied red and green things. What to do, what to do.

I always made a 10 layer jello - it was so festive and really looked pretty made in a glass cake pan so as to get the full effect of seeing all 10 layers. Don't make it anymore - too much work for 2 people - takes all day the day before since you have to let each layer set up before pouring on the next.

Well, I haven't baked anything this year-I used to bake gingerbread cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and sugar cookies every year.

I will be making my mulled cider today. Apple cider, a little orange juice, cinnamon sticks, ginger, nutmeg, and slices of apple that I simmer in my crockpot. I serve it in mugs with a shot of apricot brandy or without the brandy for children and those who don't drink alcohol. I've made this every year for at least 20 years.

I'm big on pinto beans and cornbread on Christmas day.... I usually make up a batch every couple of weeks and for some reason it usually works out Christmas gets a dose.

Failing that I'll bake a couple of potatoes, smother them in chopped onions, jalapeno and plain yogurt. Makes for some fine eating.

Yes, I make homemade hot rolls. I usually fix a special dessert, but it varies from year to year. It was chocolate silk pie this year. Have fun making the gingerbread house with your granddaughter!---Luvs

I always have to make Gumdrop Cookies. Just like my Grandma did every Christmas. Also, I make her Fantasy Fudge recipe. The people I work with love them, and I always tell them they can thank my Grams for making me such a good cook.

Yes..but I'm not "allowed " to make it..lol...(because everybody here says "AAAGGGGHHHHH" when I do!!) They can't stand it and call it "nasty".Boiled custard...the kind you drink...with lumps in it....and a little Jack Daniels or whatever. My mother used to make a big punchbowl of it....Also...my dr. doesn't allow it either.,,cause I have high cholesterol. Boo Hoo.
EDIT..Sandwich.....I wish you'd post that cider recipe!! I bet it makes the house smell like Christmas. Too late for me for this year...but maybe New Years!!??
