A couple of years ago I was an Americorp volunteer with the ARC. Now, I jokingly say I'm doing volunteer work at the Assisted Living facility where I work as the pay is so low. We get paid every 2 weeks and I always say that the pay is not too bad except that we are required to do that "volunteer week" in between the "pay week."...lol

I am a regular volunteer at a small community center where I teach computers to all ages, although most of those I work with are teenagers who can quite get over a 61 woman who knows more about computers than they think they do, they do not know nearly as much as they think they do.
I also help with the clothes closet and holiday celebrations. Whatever is needed at the center.
Hard to explain, but It is more rewarding than paid work.

Yes, I've always enjoyed volunteering, you should give it a try. I've been volunteering at a local nursing home and a retirement home for several yrs now. I worked in the nursing home one summer in the kitchen and I have friends from church who are residents at both, so I can see the needs from each side. I visit many of the folks and help with meals, taking residents to their rooms, activities, parties, whatever is needed. It's very rewarding and I've gotten to know a great many of the residents, we have lovely chats.---Luvs

American Red Cross & I love it.
FYI- Seniors & other age groups have been volunteering for ARC for many many years as are other volunteer groups. All are great groups but the volunteers are becoming less instead of growing.

I volunteer at a local christian school. I find it satisfying and feel it's exactly where God wants me to be.

No, but I am going to check into it since I am all alone. I work with a guy whose wife manages a nursing home. He said it is sad how many elderly people have no one to ever visit them, because they have no children, or they have outlived their children, or their children live out of state. It would have to be rewarding to see a smile on someone's face plus rewarding for myself. That is one of my goals for 2008.
