I have just bought a 24 volt cordless drill for 83 usd and it seems to work great.

But I'd like to know why a drill with the same features in another brands like Milwaukee or Dewalt are far more expensive.

I have a drill press from China. The biggest problem was the packaging. A plastic part broke during shipping. I just took it back and got another one. Some parts are made out of a lighter metal and some parts are just as sturdy as anything made anywhere else. I don't use it everyday and it has worked great so far. But back to your question. Most of the reason is labor costs. The workers are paid next to nothing.
This reminds me of Japanese products in the 60's. Same thing...everyone said they were junk and they were to some extent. But look at them now. I think I'll go buy stock in a Chinese company. Maybe I'll get lucky and pick the next Nissan or Toyota. :-)

Between the brand names and quality they stand for such as Dewalt, Milwaukee ect are all good brands because they hold up.Me personaly i would not buy a cheap drill or power tool in general ,a store i used to work at sold these cheap power drills that were made in china and they were terrible. On the power tools they had electrical short in them so once u press the trigger it would hum and start smoking, on the cordless drills they would die out faster, almost everything in the motor and housing was plastic, wouldnt keep charge. On good branded cordless tools when they get dropped they are made where the battery is exspected to disconnect from the drill its self ....i tried it on one the p.o.s. and the whole thing just broke. The plastic housing just cracked and the motor fell out.You dont have to get the most exspensive power tool out there but i would atleast get a mikita or black and decker are good valued tools even craftman power tools are a great buy.

First of all, Cost/Price here in the US as well as globally, is driven by demand. Brand Names as Icons, become favorites, in some measure because of Hype, and certainly experience through how a brand performs and how long it lasts.

The other answers here are valid, certainly, but many components of Brand items, are also manufactured or assembled in Asian countries.

With no offense to American made (I am), We would be in a slightly lower level of technological evolution, were it not for certain Asian nations.

One answer offered a clue,,,Quality. The Chinese aren't strictly to blame, and mass production occurs in every industrial society, but more importantly, Quality "Control" is lacking in some Asian markets. Then WE in this country are at a disadvantage when the "Chicago" 18 V cordless stops working. We aren't totally without blame however. The planets population is, in general, a "throw away society"

My "Chicago" now rests at the bottom of my lake.

I just answered a similar Q within a couple of days ago.

I once worked for a defense contractor, as a buyer for hardware and software, for a night sight device on helicopters. I was shopping the components and happend to return to one major supplier in Japan.

I sent an inquiry, stating that my company, and the Govt. demanded no less than a 94% success rate.

The company responded,,, "Certainly we can fill your contract, on time, at your budgeted cost, but we have a question.

What should be do to create the 6% failure rate you suggest?"

There is an old saying, you get what you pay for and that also applies to power tools. Buy quality domestic and you'll be a happy camper for the most part.

I stay american made..The metal for one thing on chinese made items is a very cheap alloy..as well as most parts they use like wire etc in them..as well..You are paying for items that more than likely were made in a "sweat shop" where kids and young people are literaly forced into slavery to manufacture these items..and with very little pay if any at all for thier "forced services'...there is alot of blood and lives lost during the manufacturing of items made there

the gears and other parts inside are made of much cheaper material and would not stand up to the heavy use that a contractor would put it through where as there American counter parts will don't get Me wrong the china tool are fine for the home owner or light duty use just don't expect it to hold up under heavy use

Chinese manufacture things in large numbers and so their cost of manufacture is less. So they can sell less. Chinese Government also gives lots of tax rebate for export. Hence you get cheap. But they compromise on quality and durablity.

Quality, I know of people who have been seriously injured from Chinese tools. Very unsafe for serious users, but if you're gentle with it, it might be okay. Merry Christmas!

JUNK, like everything else that comes from there. Why would power tools be any different?

Thats the key words, just bought, I have had my 18volt dewalt for about 3 years, batteries are still strong as ever, for the average home owner, you probably will be satisfied though. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. Just my opinion.
