Consider this---
Many men of the age when their health begins to deteriorate are war veterans. Soldiers don't wear ear protection when firing guns or other munitions (like a Howitzer, bazooka, etc.).
Men also didn't protect their ears while running machinery, as there was no such thing as OSHA then, or awareness about noise-induced hearing loss.
Vietnam vets listened to loud music in their youth at home, in the car, or at concerts, further adding to the war-related hearing loss.
Many people either don't realize they have hearing loss or are in abject denial. Others can't afford hearing aids or won't wear them because of vanity or discomfort.
We will have an entire generation of both men AND women with noise-induced hearing loss once the walkman and iPod generation hit their 30's and 40's. In about 15 years, nurses will be shouting at ALL of their patients, not just men.
I think it's time to buy stock with hearing aid manufacturers.

I take my 91 year old father to the Veteran's Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, and I have to say I have never experienced such extremely kind, sensitive, and caring personnel. From the people at the information desk to the cafeteria workers, the nurses and doctors, you name it, they are all incredible. They have always, without exception, been very sweet to my dad, and yes, they have to repeat what they're saying and raise their voices, because he was in combat in WWII and has a hearing loss from that. They don't mind a bit. They show him such respect; they ask all about his service, and give him a handshake when we leave, telling him that it's been an honor to serve him. Sometimes a nurse or doctor will call in other staff members just to meet him. Many times the younger doctors say, "Thank you, Sir, it's been an honor. God Bless." As the years pass and I take my dad to the VA more often, and see the toll the years are taking, their extra special treatment of my father makes it easier for both of us.

Not just the guys. I've found shouting at both sexes of seniors, assuming deafness.

I had noticed that too, I think in a lot of cases it is necessary. Back in the day these men did not wear hearing protection on the job and the majority of them do have some hearing loss. They only have to speak up and say something if they aren't hard of hearing .

Thought it was a well-known fact that all men have convenient deafness lol. They've used it that often during their younger years that it's a bit like the old saying about pulling faces and the wind changing........they used the ability of convenient deafness that often that it's stuck with them! xx

The last time I was in the hospital, all I got was a red cross nurse, instead a sweet caring blonde.

I can't praise my local Hospital too highly, they are a very nice collection of Doctors and Nurses, even the Consultant's secretary remembered my name when I passed her in the corridor.

I think when people get to a certain age, all nurses talk to them in a loud voice. I had one talking so loudly when I gave my last blood sample that I had to remind her that I wasn't hard of hearing yet.

WHAT? YOU SAY YOU WANT BUTTER WITH THAT BISCUIT? WE DON'T SERVE BUTTER IN THIS FACILITY. GET BACK IN YOUR ROOM BEFORE WE HAVE YOU SEDATED........NOW!
Is this how you like it? Dude, it's just more fun yelling at you guys...you always run just to get away from the sound of our voices. It's safer for everyone this way. No one can call you a pervert if you aren't roaming the hallways. We WANT everyone to hear!
