depends on how heavy in all honesty... sometimes its just genetics, sometimes there's a problem with your endometrium... it could be a lot of things... i don't think you could 'stop' it, but if you used supplies that were more suitable for a heavy flow, i don't see why its a problem... though... i'd talk to your doctor about it if it really bothers you

Women are just different. Some have heavy periods and others are fortunate enough to have lighter periods. Going on the birth control pill will make your period lighter with few cramps.
There are some things that might cause you to have heavier periods that should be evaluated by a doctor:
This may be endometriosis, or possibly adenomyosis, fibroids or polyps -- or it may even be normal for you. In any case, yours is a common and fairly easily treated problem.
Adenomyosis is a "cousin" to endometriosis. In endometriosis, the uterine lining tissue gets outside the uterus and attaches to other internal organs and structures. In adenomyosis, this tissue penetrates into the wall of the uterus an abnormal amount. Heavy, crampy periods are the hallmark of adenomyosis.
Fibroids are benign growths of the uterine wall muscle, and polyps are fleshy stalks that protrude from the uterine lining, again benign in the vast majority of cases. Both can increase bleeding by increasing the surface area of the uterine cavity -- if there is more surface, then there is more to slough off every month.
Visit your gynecologist or family doctor if you are having very heavy and painful periods. Based on a physical exam and perhaps an ultrasound, your doctor may be able to give you a specific diagnosis and treatment. Often non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), may help with both cramps and bleeding. Birth control pills are another frequently used treatment. Occasionally surgery is an option as well.
If you have days of heavy cramps and heavy bleeding, you may pass dark, chunky clots of blood. On such days your contractions are so fast and so strong that the blood gets forced out before the anti-coagulants have time to take effect. So the blood clots. And you pass big chunky gobs of stuff.
If the clots you are passing are larger than, say, a quarter, you might want to ask your doctor about it, because that indicates that your periods are quite heavy, and they might want to check for fibroids (benign tumors)..

Hey there,
If you want to know more about uterine fibroids and you want to eliminate all the symptoms naturally you must read this great book: http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=553
Uterine fibroids are a common health concern among a major population of women. Uterine fibroids are benign, non cancerous tumours that originate within the uterus. They are also called fibroid tumors, leiomyomas, or myomas. They are made of the same muscle tissues as the uterus, though they tend to be hardened. This is possibly because uterine fibroids contain higher levels of estrogen than the surrounding uterine tissues. Some uterine fibroids may be so small that they can't be felt even during an internal examination; some may be large enough to make a prominent bulge in your stomach.

I don't know about the whys of it. The same reason, or lack thereof, that accounts for all of the individual variations in our bodies?
I don't think that heavy bloodflow is a sign of fertility. It's the egg that counts, not the uterine lining.
If you're worried about heavy overnight bleeding, consider either setting an alarm to get up and change your pad/tampon in the middle of the night, or get yourself some black sheets (and a waterproof mattress cover to protect your mattress).
You may want to consider the Pill, Patch, Ring or other monthly hormonal birth control. They usually cause periods to be lighter, more regular, and sometimes less cramp-y.

In addition to genetics, sometimes medical problems such as a hormone imbalance can cause periods to be heavy. The only way to know for sure what is going on is to see your doctor for further evaluation.
One thing that I have found helped ease my flow some was to eat things rich in iron such as spinach, raisins, and peanut butter (if not allergic to peanuts of course).

I would say it's not premenopause. I've found multiple sites that say it could be an inflamation or cancer and fibrosis. My mom had excessive clots and she was getting low in iron. It can be dangerous to not treat something like this. I know my mom ended up having to have a hysterectomy. I hope you do convince her as it's important to get checked. Monica

I have heard that many black women seem to suffer from this inconvenience, but they are not in isolation. Your GP may be able to shed some light on the reason for you. I would definitely try some sort of control, the birth control pill may help you some, talk to your doc.
Merry Christmas
