In 1914 the Commonwealth did not even exist. Canada was a self-governing Dominion within the British Empire and as such was naturally in the war on the side of Britain /the allies. It would have been inconceivable at the rime for it to have done anything else. The whole Empire joined the Allied side. Try and put yourself in the mindset of the time in thinking about questions like this.

Canada was and is Part of the Commonwealth, but that is not the reason they joined the Allies.

Eire was a Commonwealth country then too, but they didnt join the Allies.

They were close links between Britain and Canada, Cultural/Family, Alsorts of ties bind the two countries.

There was no commonwealth back then, I think someone said that earlier. Canada was then a dominion of the United Kingdom. It controlled its internal affairs but had no control over external affairs such as war. As soon as the UK declared War on Germany. Canada was automatically an enemy of Germany
