The War of 1812 began June 18, 1812, and lasted until early 1815. President James Madison requested a declaration of war to protect American ships from being stopped and searched by the British. He also wanted to prevent Britain from forming alliances with Native Americans. His decision was influenced by Americans in the West and South, who hoped to expand the United States by seizing control of both Canada and Florida. In 1802 Jackson was elected major general of the Tennessee militia. When the War of 1812 broke out, he offered to lead an invasion into Canada, but his suggestion was ignored by the administration of President James Madison.
American attempts to invade Canada during the war failed but U.S. forces won a number of important naval battles. British forces invaded parts of the United States and captured the American capital Washington, forcing President Madison to flee. Andrew Jackson decisively defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, after the Treaty of Ghent (1814) had already ended the war and returned captured territories. Americans saw the War of 1812 as a triumph that showed the new nation could fend off foreign threats.

1812 to 1815

The War of 1812 is one of the forgotten wars of the United States. The war lasted for over two years, and while it ended much like it started; in stalemate; it was in fact a war that once and for all confirmed American Independence. The offensive actions of the United States failed in every attempt to capture Canada. On the other hand, the British army was successfully stopped when it attempted to capture Baltimore and New Orleans. There were a number of American naval victories in which American vessels proved themselves superior to similarly sized British vessels. These victories coming after victories in the Quasi War (an even more forgotten war) launched American naval traditions.

Bishop Ussher worked out that the world was created 4004 years before the birth of Christ. That would mean that the War of 1812 started in 5816.

Of course Bishop Ussher was wrong.
