Good question...my guess is they are just looking for an excuse to vent their frustrations.
I wonder why some people get all worked up over me saying "Happy Holidays" too.
I guess they are just feeling persecuted and need a focal point.

This is a complicated question and probably a temporary issue.
Christmas is a particular religious festival, but the christmas holiday and many traditions are not specifically christian.
This means that some people want to celebrate values of christmas (many of which are shared by christians) without it specifically being christian.
Some people feel that members of the christian community, especially in the united states, impose their values onto the community.
I believe, as a dedicated agnostic, that there much anyone can learn christianity. If you hold your beliefs and are true to them while respecting other people then this temporary problem is going to be forgetten in 5 or 10 years.

That's a really good question. Jesus is the reason for the season. If a person is bothered by cigarette smoke they probably don't smoke and don't go to smoke filled places. If a person is offended by foul language, they probably don't use foul language and don't hang around with those that do. If it bothers a person to hear/say Merry Christmas then don't say it and go somewhere where it isn't said. I have the right to say Merry Christmas don't I? I hear they don't say Merry Christmas in Russia. I don't think the Russian Communist government lets them say it. Go to Russia !!

It shouldn't bother anyone, it's the name of the festival. Do they worry when you say "happy easter"? That's named after a Norse goddess. What about Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday? More Norse gods. Don't get me started on the months of the year...

Don't bother about what
they think when you say
Merry Christmas.
Christmas is an annual
religious festival.
For many non-religious
people, it is a time of
celebration, enjoyment,
merriment. Plus exhanging
and opening of presents.
