I love Yasmin, but i'm not too sure about Maryam. People might pronounce it "yam", like the potato. Besides, though it's the Arabic name for the Virgin Mary, the name Mary and all forms of it mean "bitter, like a bitterly wanted child".
How about Miriyan? It's Aboriginal and means "star"

The names sound very similar, if they are for twin girls, I think they would be a good choice. Maryam sounds very close to Miryam, which was the original Hebrew name that was the root of Mary. 'Yam' actually means 'water' as in the ocean.. It is a very, very lovely name. And so is Yasmin.
If it were my name I would be happy with either one.

i wouldn't pick Yasmin for my child but it sounds very ethnic and if i lived in that culture (whatever it is) i might. i like Maryam better spelled Mariam.
Maryam=the name Mary+the word am
It makes me say it wrong when i look at it.
