Well, the good news is it is legitimate. Sort of.
What it really is is a site where they make their money by making you a "published writer" and having you buy the book your poem appears in. The cost is usually upwards of $50, and they are hoping that you will buy one for yourself, and that your proud friends and family will also pony up the money for a book.
I am sorry to say it, but everyone I know who has ever submitted to that site has received the highest of awards for their writing from the site. I myself submitted a four sentence throw-away junker as a joke, and it took three years for them to stop pestering me and trying to get me to buy books and go to conventions to read my opus in front of a crowd and accept an award.
So basically, what's in it for you is that you can sign up to buy a book or two or a dozen, and toss away a lot of money, and they will print your poem in one of their volumes. You can say you are a published poet, but since it's basically the equivalent of a vanity press, it really doesn't amount to much. I would just ignore them, and save the money if I were you.
If you are serious about writing poetry, there are plenty of legitimate contests you can enter. Go to your local library and have the librarian help you find real competitions. Many of them are run by small legitimate literary magazines. Usually, if you win a contest, you don't even get paid in money; you get paid in free copies of the publication. At least it's real, and not just a scam to get you to buy stuff.
Best of luck to you.

It's not really a scam because they actually publish a book. I tried it years ago, sent in some nonsense I wrote in about 2 minutes. Of course, I won editor's choice and it took a couple of years to get them to stop sending me stuff. Still, if you'd like to see a poem in print, at least there's something to buy.

LOL. I've won this THREE YEARS IN A ROW. So I got my friend to send in a ROSE'S ARE RED poem and SHE got EDITOR'S CHOICE. I think it's a hoax, I do like putting up my poems though

I've never been to poet.com, but poetry.com is a load of crap. If they're only trying to get you to buy things, it isn't worth doing. Keep in mind what you're getting out of it, and if it is as benificial to you than it is to them.

Why do you have to buy stuff to get published? I don't get it. If a publisher thought you had a great manuscript, they'd pay YOU to publish your stuff! LOL
