the BCS stands for the Bowl Championship Series its a system in college football used to determine which teams go to which bowl game. The logic behind it is all from computer analysis so its really hard to explain...but usually it chooses the right teams to be in the major bowl games (sugar bowl, orange bowl, fiesta bowl, rose bowl, and the national championship) the problem with playing a tournament style of play for college football is that it will require much more time out of college students because each week is used to rehab any injuries that they have been dealing with because it is such a high contact sport. As for college basketball its a low contact sport so the recover rate is going to be faster than a football players.

The why not a tournament is what everyone is asking this time of year. The BCS is ( Bowl Championship Series) is a basically a tier system for the post season bowl games in College football. Out of all of those bowlgames, 4 are "BCS bowls" which are the biggest games. Additionally there is 1 BCS championship game, the winner of which is the national champ. Why is it called "series" when none of the other bowls really matter? Well, originally the BCS had no set national title game. The four big games (fiesta, rose, orange and sugar bowls) had what were thought to be the 8 best teams in the country. What ended up happening quite a bit is the National championship got split. No one wanted that so they tweaked the system to have one game and just left the name of the process the same. The two teams to play in the championship are decided by the BCS rankings, which take into account, the Polls (AP coaches poll and the USA TODAY writers poll) win loss %, a series of computer polls that are done...basically a lot of things. There are a lot of problems inherent in the system. One thing is that the 2 major polls start before the season, so rankings to begin with have more to do with what a team did last year- not to mention if team A starts ranked 3rd and Team B starts ranked 5th and both go undefeated- Team A will go ahead of team B based on nothing except the preaseason opinions of a bunch of writers and coaches. It's a really flawed system.

Wikipedia has a good explanation. If you don't want to read all that, here's an explanation in a nutshell.
BCS stands for Bowl Championship Series. It is a way to determine who plays for the "national championship" in Div-1 college football. The BCS is a poll. It is designed to get a consensus of number one and number two, who play for the championship. It is the average of three polls - the USA Today Coaches Poll, the Harris Interactive Poll, and an average of six computer polls, with the highest and lowest computer scores dropped from the equation.
The major bowls (Rose, Fiesta, Sugar and Orange) are contractually bound to use the BCS in some form until 2010. I say "in some form" because the formula is tweaked almost every year after the powers that be realize it sucks and needs to be "fixed". Like a lot of things, the more changes they make it, the worse it gets.
There's been all kinds of excuses for why there's no playoff. The best explanation is that there are too many teams and not enough time. I kind of buy that. The real reason though comes down to money. The major conferences and bowls have a lot to lose if the current bowl system loses viewers due to a playoff.

The BCS is designed ONLY to match the #1 and #2 teams in a championship game to determine the winner of the NCAA national championship.

the BCS is a system which grades each team on there strength of schedule, wins, and losses, it makes football exciting cause 1 loss can ruin your season so u have to play hard each week, i think a tournament would be best cause then anyone can have a chance at winning the national title, but the excitment, and pressure to win would not be there

It stands for Bullshit and Crappy System...
I have no idea how it works, and I don't think any Nobel Prize Winners can't figure out how it work.. Even Albert Einstein has to come up with the conclusion that figuring out BCS formula is much harder than figuring out the theory of relativity..
