XCV = 95
XCIX = 99

C is 100. L =50 X= 10 V=5 I=1

the number in front is subtracted from larger numbers behind and added to smaller numbers. only 3 of a number. if you need 4 go to the subtraction rule

I=1 , V=5 , X=10 , L=50 , C=100 , D=500 , M=1000

95 = VC (100-5)
99 = IC (100-1)

When the small Roman Numeral (e.g. X) is on the left hand side of the big Roman Numeral (e.g. D) , that means the relation of them is to subtract the small Roman Numeral from the big Roman Numeral:
XD = 490 (500-10)

VC doesn't exist.
C= 100
X = 10
V= 5
XC = 90 = 100 -10
XCV = 95 = 100-10 + 5

L = 50
VL doesn't exist.
XLV? XL = 50 -10 = 40, therefore XLV = 40 +5 = 45.
IL? Doesn't exist.
XLIX = 49

LXL = 50 + 10 + 50 so it doesn't equal 90! It equals 110!

99 = 90+9 = (100 -10 ) + 9 = XCIX.
LXLV = 50 + 10 + 50 + 5 = 115, not 95!

95 In Roman Numerals

2016-10-05 11:10:58 · answer #5 · answered by gulfam 4 · 0 0

I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1,000
I, X, and M can usually be repeated up to 3 times in succession, so III=3, XXX=30, and MMM=3,000.
To write other values, place a smaller numeral before a larger to subtract it: IV=4, IX=9, XIX=19, XL=40, and LXL=90.
Placing a smaller after a larger adds it, so VI=6, XI=11, XXI=21, XLV=45, and LXLV=95.

95 = 90+5 and so is written ax XCV, since XC is 90 and V is 5

99=90+9 so this is XC (90) IX(9) or XCIX
