There are thee things that happen
#1 mind over matter works
#2 Some illness & pain pass by themself without medication intervention- thus the placebo had nothing to do with the change in the condition
#3 The placebo doesn't work & the patient needs something real

The power of the mind is profound, but not without holes in the statment of mind over matter concerning medication.

Often the power of suggestion can be powerful.
Some people are very open to power of suggestion. Mostly because they are not sure & firm in their own sense of who they are.

I had an elderly patient once who needed ocassional pain shots. I often started with a plecebo of saline solution. Often she felt some relief. I believe part of that being her getting attention & interaction from another human. being. There were also times when she didn't get any pain relief and I had to give her what I told her was an aditional dose to ease her pain. That is when she truely had pain relief.

A positive attitude is always helpful....but some dieases and mailties truely can't be cured by mind over matter.
