i'm doing some staining, and i'm about to varnish. its rainy and cold outside, i think 40 degrees right now. its sheltered from the rain,

anyways, how will this effect the drying process? i plan to leave it out over night. is this no good? or am i fine to do that?

not a great idea,
you need to heat the room up . maybe use propane,
heat the room , for say two hours them apply the stain ,
make sure its warm ,over night , then do the same with the
polyurethane, give it two coats , hand sand between coats
if you dont , you will get frog eyes in the finish .
little bubbles, and you wont be happy , a even temp is much better ,than too cold

The drying process is going to be longer in the cold weather. It would be better to wait for the temp to get into the mid to high fifties but, if you can't ? Best of luck.

Windy and cool for the Winter. Hot and dry for the Summer.
