I don't look down on people who are single. Do you see this occurring? I wasn't aware that singles might be looked down on. Here in the United States we are extremely diversified. We have people who don't choose to marry, those who do marry, but whom do not choose to have children, we have single people whom choose to have children with or without a second parent for the child(ren), we have people of alternative lifestyles who are not allowed to marry even if they choose too, and many different religious and political beliefs, this list goes on and on of the diversity here.

I know there are many who need to find people to look down on in order to feel better about themselves. This is the real reason people look down on others. They simply do not have a enough positive self esteem to just feel good about who they are as individuals so turn to the differences of others to find something they are "superior" over.

It is a sad fact of human nature, and yet there are at times good reason to look down on some people. However, looking down on somebody simply because they are single, either out of choice, or simply due to not finding that someone special, is a rather silly reason to do so.

If it were based perhaps on whether or not somebody is a thief, or a rapist, or a killer, or a child abuser, then, yes, those people deserve a bit of other's looking down on them.

I use to believe that everyone is as good as the next person, that everyone had some redeeming quality if one looked deep enough to deserve respect and decent treatment. Life has corrected that innocent and naive belief. Now I understand that many people make choices and those choices lead to further slippage from decent human charactor and humane treatment of their fellow man/woman.

Now, I live in the U.S. where it is not a big deal for somebody to choose singlehood over married life. However, many people do not live in the United States and do not have the same social patterns. Some countries place deep importance upon marriage and family. Some women are raised to expect nothing more than to marry and have children, to be a wife and mother. Being a wife and mother is the ultimate job role in our world. I do not mean that a father and husband is less than a wife and mother, as the father is just as important to the family. So, I will rephase this and state that marriage and family is the ultimate job role in the world. Without our families we would cease to be. We would no longer be a part of this planets inhabitants.

Raising healthy and well balanced children is vital to our survival. It is those children who are raised best; who grow up to become vital part of the worlds society, are the ones who lead us into the future. This is why parenthood is the most important role anyone could have. When children are abused and neglected they do not grow to their full potential, are often burdens on society, and worse, can become predators, and hurt the rest of us. Studies show that children do best in homes with both parents. Regardless of how well a single parent does his or her job, the child does not do as well as his/her counterparts in a two parent home.

So, in some counties singles may indeed be looked down upon. If there is an expectation of marriage by a certain age, and a family began shortly thereafter, then those who do not conform to societies expectations will be looked down upon.

However, I do not live in a society where such a social expectation exists. So, I don't know anyone who looks down on singles.

I don't know anyone who looks down upon people who are single. Perhaps people are a little bit jealous or envious of them, because they can go and come as they please. I cannot imagine looking down upon someone because they are single. That just seems crazy and so unfair.

Anyway, Maddy, Happy Holidays to you and your Families!!!
