Intel and AMD processors are really the only two contenders as far as personal computer microprocessors are concerned. I have had positive experiences with each, but Intel processors tend to cost more than the equivalent AMD processor. Google "quad-core processor" for some information on the most recent processor generation available from both Intel and AMD.

As much as I want to like AMD chips, I have had nothing but trouble from their microprocessors, at least all of them since the K6-III. (The K6-III was an amazing device. For its time, it was far and away the best thing on the market.)
I try to stick with Intel processors now. But not the Celerons, those are crap.

After looking at the specifications of several processors I would say IBM cell processors are the best out there now. Ask Sony and Microsoft because those are what power there gaming consoles.
