We need some government programs but the liberals are trying to shove a socialist standard on our country & it just isn't good!
We need a smaller government, Not a bigger one!
Just because we want the government to be smaller doesn't mean we want it to fade away!
Just because we want a safety net for those who lose their jobs doesn't mean that safety net needs to be nice & comfy. If you notice what people on food stamps look like, most are FAT! Seems like we are paying for TOO MUCH of their food! And I know someone who has been on food stamps many times. The whole family can eat like royality when on food stmps. But if the dad gets a job, he loses the food stamps & they need to scrimp to get enough money for food.
So these socialist programs meant to help the poor only serves to hold them back by taking away motivation to get a job!

I would like to disregard absolutely everything previous conservative posters have argued, especially the idea that conservatives want a smaller government (since conservative presidents for some time have increased the government).
I want to actually get to the heart of your question, which is more about the general voting populace and the framing of conservatives than actual conservative policy.
First, we should disregard evangelical policy informing the party. Things like gay rights and such aren't what have actually driven the party. Nor, really, is personal aspiration or any such garbage.
If you really look hard at what conservatives believe, it's that humans are evil. Not bad, but evil. They love Guiliani for reducing New York to peace, they love increasing military expenditures, they love denigrating others at all turns. Why? Because there are evil people out there who need to be stopped.
Compare this with liberalism, which assumes, generally, that people are good. We can trust each other to pay taxes, to not abuse these social institutions, etc.
The problem is that conservatives perceive themselves as good, whereas everyone else is evil. That is far from the truth. Everyone perceives themselves as good, which is why social institutions work (in developed countries). People are somewhere between good and evil...and the extraordinary preponderance _want_ to be good. So they accept social institutions and do not abuse them, so the system works.
Its is this fundamental outlook that causes conservatives to think the way they do. That is why they buy into the system at the same time as saying it is bad.

It is interesting in a question about why liberals are mistaken for socialists (or even more absurdly communists) we get a couple of good answers but then a couple of ignorant diatribes about what a liberal "really"is. I am a liberal. Despite the attempts of many to make that a dirty word I am not ashamed of it. I do not believe in the state "running everything" but I do believe in government regulation of market failures. I do not want to "punish the rich" but I do believe that a country will thrive more when it can eliminate poverty and ensure everyone access to proper education and healthcare (why business would want an unhealthy, uneducated workforce I have never understood). I do not believe that religon has any place in government. This does not make me anti-religous - it just means that I support keeping religon in churchesm temples and mosques not in the school curriculum. I do not force my views on others - I simply expect all to be equally supported - so trying to enforce a viewpoint that gays are evil or that a woman cannot choose what to do with her body will raise my ire. You can choose not to be gay and not to have an abortion but you have no right to prevent others, or to disenfranchise or segregate or alienate those that choose to do so. This is what the Dem leaders are supporting. Yet to some we shall always be "communists". If people choose to speak like that, take pride in displaying ignorance, they should not be surprised when thier viewpoint in general is disregarded as an ignorant one.

Because liberals make silly analogies such as this.
What do the necessary government entities that have been set up to control anarchy, educate our youth, provide utilities, promote commerce and stop exploitation in the work place have to do with socialism or, liberalism?
Nothing at all.

most cons seem to have grown up republican and have deep feelings of fear over things in life......some how religion in early life and religion relearnd in prison will cause these feelings of liberal bias, some how this feeling is caryed with them when they leave prison and can cause even more bitter feelings......its as if a sain inviroment is the cause,,,,,, they meet freedom ......the prison is socialism completely....i am only saying that religion seems to confuse as mutch as it helps.....people just can't always except help very well .....its a independent thing it seems to me ....learned early in life......make it on your own no matter what........not ask for help in school growing up ...pride is a big one....dad maybe said you have to make it on your own son ,,,,,nobody can help you .......religious pride is strong and dangerous.......liberal programs such as teachers wanting to help ,,,,doctors , welfare programs etc,,,,...these things too, seem to be avoided .....even firemen, nurses, police help too is avoided by inner pride folks....poverty programs are avoided also.....in the 60's children got taken away if there was only one parent .......the scares are endless from a early age ,,,,pride has few friends....and then brought up in a far right inviroment of makeing it on your own ....maybe in a church feeling of feeling different , odd, not like two parent , thus there was a feeling of even more attention laid on one, because all those so called rightous ones felt sorry for you and you new it , and you excepted and maybe used that attention.....it becomes a act after awhile.....a power play of a sort.....some would say spoiled in a way ......a hunger seems to come and no one can do enough to help and you feel cheated .......first we must forgive yourself and forgive others......jealousy causes complaining....pride, envy, we all speak from our own dream........social situations only become hard because we have no control over them in many cases...and with out social the future can be bleak, to say the least....so now do we understand the neo-con world any better or not, the feeling of pride and independence......the fear of help and the freedom of being alone .....this is one of americas special problems , but it also is connected to the world issues.......so much more could be added but out of time now......

Well you threw everything into the mix, then blamed the 'cons'. You failed to say that all, that is being taken from your weekly pay, not a donation, no choice. Who do you think pays for these programs, you, I think not. Your statement about unemployment shows you ignorance, unless your an illegal with all your people on the backs of American workers.

Scourge is totally where it's at.
The silent majority used to have enough sense to stay silent. See Bismarck: "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt". Now they're everywhere, they never shut up, relentlessly repeating a tune that was imbecilic the first time around.
They don't know what any of these terms mean: liberal; socialist; communist; or even conservative. But they toss 'em around as if they actually had ideas, when it's just REACTION. Why this gang used to be called, accurately, "reactionaries". "Knee-jerk" conveys the same sense of their thoughtful interpretations of political life.
They never get tired of talking to themselves, the ever-familiar collection of corporate shills, geezers in golf pants, cat stranglers, Bible beaters, etc. You start thinking, Jeez, could it be inbreeding? Do these folks go to the family reunion to pick up girls?
And after awhile, as you see, the style, if not the sick belief system, is contagious. We become victims to talk radio and all the demagogic apparatus they've teed up to enshrine Babbitry.
May God have mercy on us.

Because Liberalism changed in the 60's. It went from being logical to being whacky!.
Can you name any good programs liberals have fought for or started since the 60s?
Now liberals fight for gay marriage, gay military, abortion on demand, nationalizing health care, punishing success through taxation, racial preferences (affirmative action), trying to understand why terrorists hate us and surrendering to them.
Not exactly the noble things they used to fight for that actually benefited their fellow Americans.
