Whenever I drive in California, I'm doing 70 MPH on the freeways and I keep seeing tree huggers driving Toyota Prius Hybrids blow past me like I'm standing still!

No, they're just as fast as equivalent non-hybrids. For example, a Prius is just as fast as your average mid-sized car. They have smaller gas engines but they also have electric engines. Electric engines provide maximum torque immediately, so hybrids can actually accelerate quite rapidly if you want them to.

In order to get the hybrid part of the car into the vehicle's engine compartment they had to shrink the size of the gas engine. Which is the reason why hybrid vehicles get worse gas mileage than the standard 4 cylinder gas model. You have to work that smaller engine harder to get it to accelerate thus using more fuel.
