That's just wrong.

I only did that once. And that was because it was sold out everywhere, except for the really expensive store, and the library didn't have it. I returned it because I could not afford to keep it, but I bought it back later when a friend loaned me some money for my "habit" of bookreading. =)

But it was not.... ethical. It seemed stupid and wrong. There are libraries. And you can buy the book and give it away, or exchange it for a different book. But it was like downloading it off the internet- reading with no intent of paying for it. Sad. The author deserves more respect than that. And the library copies aren't donated, so the authors get some benefit from them.

Now, if you get a book for Chrismas, read it, decide it wasn't worth the wrapping paper and return/exchange it, I don't have a problem with that, as long as you kept it nice. Someone else is going to want to read it, you know.

No, and I find parting with a book I've bought really hard. My husband just bought me an e-Reader, though, and now I'll be getting 90-95% of the books I read over the internet, and will buy only those series and authors I really want to collect. First, though, I've got to sort, log, box up, and get rid of nearly 5000 books (approximately 4500 in paperbacks) ... and although I can sell them, I think I'll be donating them to charities that will give them to people who love to read but who can't afford to buy books ...

I do that at the library all the time.

Wait: you mean return for money!? No.

What I do is buy them for a buck from the "friends of the library" non-profit organization, then return them, anonymously, through the book drop, or in a bunch of books that I DONATE to the "friends of the library."

'mI bad.

I can never get away with that because I buy a lot of paperbacks and would wind up bending the spines...

Hardbacks, however... wow. That's actually a pretty good idea.

It's funny, if you think about it. Bookstores actually stay in business when these books a seriously for free to read at the library....

Nope. It's tacky. Get them from the library if you're going to do that.
