I mean a candle that was not lit.

It's The One who is not there to light it.

It's a mystery; because many say He's everywhere. Others say He's invisible, ergo the darkness. That should solve the mystery. Or does it!0!

(1) The person lighting it ran out of matches
(2) The person that should light it decided not to do so
(3) It is daytime and a candle's light is unneeded or unwanted.
(4) The wick of the candle was too short to light
(5) Someone already blew out the candle because they were delusional and thought it was on their birthday cake.
(6) That the church (or location) owns at least one candle.
(7) Death and/or dishonor
(8) Potentiality
(9) Loss money, souls, and/or puppies
(10) That the alter is sturdy enough to hold the weight of one candle
...
It could signify anything depending on the intentions of the community placing the candle on the alter (creating context) and not lighting it (creating meaning). Some on the previous list are signified by necessity (like #10) and some are only possibilities (like #9).

An unlit candle could signify death. Someone's light had been snuffed out. That unlit candle on an altar might mean that the person was a sacrefice. An altar is a place of sacrefice. Each of us is a light in this world. Light is always associated with love and life as well as knowledge and consciousness. A conscious human being has so much to contribute to the world.
