That depends on the link to the website. The site from which your are buying stuff should use SSL. If so, the traffic that includes your credit info will be encrypted, no matter what the wireless is doing. Anyone sniffing the wireless traffic will see garbage.
You should avoid any site that is not using SSL (your browser should display some kind of a lock icon when using SSL).
Encrypted wireless only secures the link between you and the wireless access point. Along the rest of the network, the traffic is open. That's why you need upper layer encryption, such as SSL.

yep - all it takes is someone (and believe me they are out there) to intercept your transmissions (unsecured)!!!!!
either wireless - or on the net
and they will get all the "go" codes they need for a wonderful after Christmas shopping spree
make sure the lock is there!

your credit card is usually safe. As long as you only give it out over a SSL connection. Like when the little lock is closed.
