Im looking for Stephen King books to read cuz I hear so much about him and like his movies. Can you name me your favorite or some good books besides The Shining, It, and the Stand , because I hear so much about them but have seen the movies and will read them eventually. Ooh and besides the Dark tower series because I dont have the time to devote myself to a book series right now. thanks

I was in your position about six months ago, asking on here what books were the best. Of course I got the usual It, The Stand, The Shining, and whatnot. Basically I just read all their summaries and picked the ones that sounded the most interesting. Now i've read 14 novels!

I LOVED: The Dead Zone, The Green Mile, Carrie, Cell, 'Salem's Lot, and Pet Sematary

I LIKED: Dreamcatcher, The Running Man, Needful Things, Different Seasons

I DIDN'T LIKE:The Shining, Dolores Claiborne, Cujo, and Gerald's Game

Good luck!

It's actually Different Seasons, to one of the previous comments. It does contain 4 novellas that are short and enjoyable reads. They aren't "Horror" even though there is a little dark side to some of them. Also The Long Walk is a nice short read that isn't horror either.

Avoid Tommyknockers at all costs. Remember, there are Stephen King fanboys out there that will defend every book written by him and claim they are all masterpieces. Tommyknockers is by far one of the worst books I have ever read.

Misery is one of my favorites- and the movie is AWESOME

Also - Stephen King has some awesome short stories. One of my favorite collections is "Everything's Eventual." Those stories are awesome. It also include 1408 - the story that inspired the movie that just came out, with John Cusak.

Currently, I'm reading Cell, and it is reading MUCH faster than I find Stephen King's books to be.... It is a bit different, and may not be his best, but I still think it is worth a read.

Have fun!

Rose Madder is a bit gruesome in places but worth reading. Obviously, The Green Mile and Misery are must reads too; great! You might like Pet Cemetery or Cat's Eye because of the animals (!)

When I get into a new author, I like to start with his first, which in Stephen King's case is Carrie, and go on in chronological order. That way you can watch him develop as a writer and follow his recurring characters (though King has very few of these). Salem's Lot was his second, and I believe The Stand was third.

The Talisman co-authored with Peter Straub is one of his best. He also wrote Black House which is the followup to The Talisman. "It" was one of his scariest as was Pet Semetary. Christine was a good book as was The Dead Zone and Firestarter.
You can't go wrong with any of his books.

Bachman Books (writing as Richard Bachman) - four fabulous novellas/shorts. Great if you've not got the time to wade into IT or Tommyknockers.
Also Misery is a cracking story.
And the Green Mile.

How about Four Seasons, which contains 4 novellas. One is "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption". Another is "The Body," which "Stand by Me" was based on. There are two other famous ones in there too, but because each is short, it won't take too long to finish each one.

Also, The Dead Zone--that's definitely one of his best books.
