My friend just found out she is pregnant today, but a couple days ago she took a half of xanax and now she is really scared that she harmed her baby and is considering aborting the baby. We calculated her to be around 6 weeks along, but her periods are erratic. She is totally surprised as this pregnancy was not planned. I told her not to worry, that more then likely the baby will be fine....but honestly I am not sure if the baby will be fine. Does anyone have any advice that I can give her, that would be positive. I don't want her to abort..!!! Please any advice... I would be greatful..!!!! Thank You!!!! I will give 10 points to the most helpful answer to me. Merry Christmas!!!!

Tell your friend that the probablity is low that her baby was affected by half a xanax. I have a friend who got pregnant while taking seizure medications, that have a very high rate of birth defects. She was taking her meds regularly for the first 8 weeks she was pregnant, because she didn't know, and wasn't planning on getting pregnant. Colin is now a vibrant 4 year old, with no effects of the medication she was taking. I have another friend who was heavy into drugs her first trimester, and stopped as soon as she found out she was pregnant, and her daughter also is fine and a healthy 6 year old. It's something that she should mention to her doctor, but again, half a xanax probably isn't going to make that much of a difference. If she had taken xanax every day for the first two months, then I might say she should be concerned, but even then, the risk is low. I'm not a doctor, just a mom to four beautiful girls and a boy due in April, and I would tell your friend to talk to her doctor before she makes any decisions about an abortion. She needs to hear it from a doctor before she makes her decision, otherwise it's something she will probably regret the rest of her life.

They usually tell you not to worry about anything you did before you found out you were pregnant. If she is worried about harming her baby why would she want to abort it????
Do you think she perhaps wants to abort because of other reasons and is maybe using this as an excuse? Well that is another issue, but taking one xanax will not cause any harm to the baby. Tell her to relax and make an appointment with the doctor. She should tell the doctor everything she has taken and they will direct her and monitor as necessary. THERE IS NO REASON TO ABORT !! That is just an extreme panic reaction, and if she is on xanax, its probably b/c there is an anxiety disorder of some sort. She will have to check all meds with her ob/gyn from now on. And staying calm is very important! Good luck!

The baby should be fine. I was 6 weeks before I found out that I was pregnant with my first. I drank, among other things, and she was the most perfect healthy baby. Your friend should not abort, just because of one pill. She should tell her doctor upfront that she did take it though.

I am pregnant now, and before becoming pregnant, I was on Prozac, Xanax, Inderal, and Lortab. The doc advised me to stop all meds except Prozac.... And only take the others as needed. Well, I did some of my own internet research, and found out that Xanax use during early pregnancy can cause birth defects. However, it meant regular use. I also took a couple of xanax's during panic attacks, b/c I thought it was okay. I have had extensive tests done on my fetus, and she is fine.

Tell your friend not to worry, to talk to her doc, and Congrats on the big news!!!

well first you should tell her to take a pregnancy test and if its still pos she should go to the OB/GYN and talk to her doc in confidentiality and tell her the situation and after 12-20weeks +/- it is possible to get genetic testing as well as see if there has been any damage done to the baby. i got this from a xanax web site

FDA pregnancy category D. Xanax can cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Do not use Xanax without your doctor's consent if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment. Use an effective form of birth control while you are using this medication. Xanax can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Good luck to you and your friend !!

The best advice I can give is to tell her not to take anymore Xanax. To consider aborting it is a very foolish thing to do. If she is that concerned, she needs to see her doctor. I honestly don't believe that ONE is going to hurt the baby. She is overly anxious and way too worried. She will be fine and so will be baby.

Have her talk to her doctor before she does anything! I don't think a 1/2 tablet would do much to the baby but she can check with her doctor first and don't let her take any more tablets if she wants the baby. You can look up Xanax and pregnancy on the web. hope she's ok.

Half a xanax is not going to hurt the baby. I have had 4 children and have been on several medications durning the times I found out I was PG. I have been on pills for my migraines, pain killers, birth control pill and others. It will take ALOT more than half a pill to do damage. Congratulations on the PG and tell your friend to go to the doc. Merry Christmas

One Xanax is not gonna harm the baby. Babies are more resilient these days. I was drinking during the first stages of my pregnancy 21 years ago(didn't know I was pregnant and stopped as soon as I found out) and my son is fine. They also gave me large amounts of morphine when I was having false labor and my baby was 7lbs 15 oz. I'm not saying continue to take any meds. But please don't abort

For the first few weeks of pregnancy the baby gets most of its nutrients from the yolk sac while the placenta is forming. So, the chances of the baby receiving the xanax is small. Just make sure she doesn't continue to take them.
