I know a lot of people who are atheists and celebrate christmas. Isn't that hypocrisy? Cause celebrating christmas is about celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, hence the name CHRISTmas.

Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Whether Jesus Christ is "Lord" or was a great man, or whatever the case may be is a different issue.

Of course it is. Now days Christmas is not about Christ for a lot of people. A lot of people view it as a fun time of year when you get to give and receive gifts. It has become very commercial. It seems like almost everybody is celebrating now. They don't even talk about Christ in most of the Christmas movies not even a brief mention.

Christmas was a holiday invented by the government because the worked so much everyday. The felt like they should make a holiday for themselves and so on Dec. 25th came christmas. It had absolutely nothing to do with religion until much later on which was invented by people as time went on. It's not hypocrisy because athiests dont see christmas as a religious holiday, they just see it as a time for celebration with their family because every body has the day off....so in a sense, we are celebrating it in its truest form. do some research

I am atheist, I don't like the idea of Christmas especially since it has become so materialistic. I don't accept gifts during Christmas, but I absolutely love the city during Christmas time. It seems like everything is so much happier. But to answer your question, yes they are hypocrites since they can't uphold their beliefs with their actions.

According to the history channel below, I guess that means if I see it as a government holiday, I could actually receive the Barnes and Noble gift card given to me. Yay!!!

Also, I see the logic of the viewpoint below. The government couldn't have made this a Christian holiday since there is supposed to be separation of Church and State.

An atheist family I know doesn't celebrate Christmas per say, they just use the day (since just about all of them have the week off school or day off work) to get together as a family, count their blessings have a nice dinner and see a movie.

Christmas doesn't have to be JUST about Christ. It's also about being grateful we made it through another year and embraceing our family and friends. People have different ways to celebrate December 25, and theres nothing wrong with that.

Some people would think it was hypocracy for Christians to celebrate Jesus' birth at a time when he could not possibly have been born, but that was a traditional feast of pagen gods.

Christmas was celebrated long before Christianity and it was known by many other names, including Yule and Saturnalia.

Spending tons of money on toys and presents, jolly fat men dressed in red, elves, reindeer, gingerbread houses.....how is that about Jesus?

It's for the kids.
and not everybody believes its his bday. Take JW"s for example.
