It is an automatic feature. It is also a USB 2.0 drive. You either got a bad drive or the laptop does not support USB 2.0.
Try it in another laptop or PC.

When you plug it into a USB port (assuming WinXP here, you may have different results if you are using something else), you'll hear this sound I liken to a "doorbell". At this point, windows will map your firefly to a drive letter (A, B, C, D, E, F, etc.). That's pretty much it.
Let's say it maps the Firefly to drive G. Well, save the files you want to drive G. Programs will defaul to "My Documents", but you can pick drive G off of the pulldown menu instead. You can go to "My Computer" and all of your drives should show up there. You can click on the drive to bring up a window that shows you the files on the jump drive. You can click on "C", navigate around and find some files and drag and drop them into the other window (the one showing you the files on the firefly) to copy existing files over.

Basically when you pop your Lexar into the usb port it should have a message that pops up such as:
Lexar Jump drive
-view folders and files
Click 'view folders and files' and your inside the jump drive.
If the thing does not pop-up, either try another USB port to connect it to or open 'My Computer' and it should be called removable drive(f:) or it might be called LexarFireFly (F:).
If it doesn't than the USB is not recognized, meaning either the USB port is faulty or the jump drive is. Try using the USB port with another device to see if its your computer or not. If its the jump drive then try it with another computer if you can, other wise return it.

My Lexar Jump Drive 1 GB wouldn't work. Bought a Kingston DT 4GB on sale. Also would not work.. Saw on Vista support thread, this site: http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtrouble_e.html#xp_asks_for_drivers
Read the section about Vista deleting USBSTOR.INF.. I restored the files, then updated the drivers through device manager. It worked like a charm.

When you purchased your jump drive you should have gotten a CD with it that has the drivers on it for the jump drive. Lexar requires drivers for their jump drives to work, they are not plug and play. If you didn't get the driver then you will need to go to their download site and download the driver for your model of jump drive, once you have that, then it should work properly.
If you are using Windows Vista Ultimate, it has the drivers built in, I don't know about the other editions of Vista.
Good luck.
