Every year they throw a party when the last undefeated team loses a game. As Super Bowl winners they were average at best.

Lets be honest that they did go to the super bowl two years in a row, vowing to dominate after losing at the end of the 71 season to the Redskins in the super bowl. I am not saying that they compare to the teams of today, but they were tough.
The defense was rock solid, the running game was iron nosed, and the passing game was controlled. If you got them to make a mistake, you were one of the rare ones. I would give them a top 10 nod, somewhere around 8 or 9. Too many teams were even more impressive but a lot of super bowl teams were not as well.

its hard to leave a team that never tasted defeat off of the top ten. i mean how much better could they have done? they didnt lose! that means they performed at a rate of 100% success. that is as good as it gets. are you understanding the words that are coming out of my mouth?
go pats
oh ya and mr cocky up there with the jab at patriots "dolphins did it without cheating." guess what? the 72 dolphins were docked a first round pick just like the 07 pats were so if your gonna call the pats cheaters include the dolphins in that category too

They were not average at best...had the world football league not come along after the 73 season (our 2nd super bowl win) and taken csonka, kick, and warfield (2 hall of famers) we probably would have won the SB after the 74 season too, that would have made 4 SB appearanses in a row with3 wins...as it was we went 71, 72, and 73 winning the last two. Those teams were loaded with hall of famers; center, OL, QB, RB, WR, and the no name defense that was near the top of the league...in the perfect season SB win against the redskins they did not even manage one offensive point...no even a field goal....those were great teams...

No, Simply because i believe every year high school football gets bigger starts, thus they go into college better and into the pros better. Not taking anything from the 72 dolphins which were a great team but the elway broncos of the late 90s and the cowboys of aikman in their superbowl runs were better.
72 fins are prob 9 or 10 if they are top 10 at all

What more could they have done? What else would they have needed to do for you to realize that this is a question that didn't need to be asked. The players on their team may not have set individual records but as far as team play I would have to say that they dominated the NFL in 72 the likes of which has not been seen since.

Without question. They ran the table in the regular season and then went on to win the Super Bowl without a single defeat. That is something no other team has done. The Patriots may be well on their way to doing it this year -- but as great as their year has been, that is something they still have yet to accomplish.
That says something about how great that "average" team was.

I think they are top 5. The only teams that were clearly better (for their time) in the SB era were the 85 Bears and the mid 70s Steelers. I guess you could argue a few others, but I think they're 3rd.
