It would be hard to do a good serious film about Elvis, because, frankly, everything he did was so darned tacky! I have to admit, I loved it as a kid: Kissin'Cousins, Roustabout, Tickle Me, etc. But it was sooo schlocky. If he had lived, he'd have been such a has-been by now.
If you'd like to see a list of all the things done about Elvis, go to imdb.com.

I think it has something to do with 2 factors.
1)Elvis' Estate
I'm sure there are big companies who want to make an Elvis film. However, Elvis' estate probably wants only the best of the best for Elvis. I'm sure it will happen in due time. Especially with Ray and Walk The Line. It is only a matter of time.
2)Elvis' Life and Career, Impact and Private Life
Whomever ends up taking on this film, from a screenwriting standpoint will have a lot on their plate. They will have to figure out just how to make his life, career, social impact on entertainment and world be delivered in a perfect way, that is honest but at the same time not disrespectful to the King and his legacy. (Especially if you want to hear Elvis' music in the film.)
I'm sure it will happen someday....

I thought the Elvis bio that starred Jonathen Rhys Myers was especially good, even though I don't give a fuzzy rat's behind about Elvis.Cameron Manheim was great as his mother too. What happened, did you miss it?

Walk the Line was good, but I don't know much about Johnny Cash. I heard that his daughter, Roseanne Cash, walked out on that movie.
The problem with the Elvis movies that come out is almost that there's too much information out there. Don't get me wrong, information is good, but of all that information out there, not all of it's true. So when these movies are made, you have no idea where the director or the writer...or whoever else is involved....is getting their information from. You have to be careful because books can lie. People want to cash in on the name Elvis, so they make stuff up. One book inparticular was a book by Albert Goldman. It claimed to be a "biography", but I won't lay a finger on that book and I'm sure any true Elvis fan will say the same. Rumors get started, formed into stories, formed into books, formed into articles, all because people want to make a buck. So when the people writing the movie, go for information, there's so much to choose from....some truth....some lies.
I adore Elvis, have been a fan since I was 5 years old, and will be a fan for life. Even as a young Elvis fan, you can't deny how big he is....all over the world. People want to be just like him and that's another problem. People want to focus on the 1950's Elvis or they exaggerate his movements. That's one of the problems I had with the movie starring Jonathan Ryes-Meyers. When he sang "If I Can Dream", he was shaking his leg and throughout the whole movie, he was stuck in the 1950's mode. Another point. There was a reality show "The next best thing" or something. I love Trent Carlini, but I couldn't stand that other guy. Yes, Elvis was known to curl his lip, but for Elvis, it was part of who he was. He didn't go around purposly curling his lip. This guy couldn't stop curling his lip and it drove me crazy.
To cut myself off - I think if somebody really sat down and did their homework and did everything they could to make this movie as accurate as possible, did everything they could to get perfect casting, a great movie could be made. Elvis is an interesting person without having to focus on the negative like most of these movies do. We're trying to pass our love for Elvis, on to future generations. We have great sources to get the truth. A lot of Elvis' family and friends are still alive. Elvis' best friend does a fabulous radio show on Elvis radio. Future generations aren't going to have what we have. ("Future generations"....I'm talking like I'm 50 and I'm only in my 20's). They are going to have no choice but to rely on us, books, internet. Do we want to pass down falsities to our children, grand-children? I know I don't. I want my children to remember Elvis as the great person he was, I don't want them to be clouded by all the negative that these movies focus on. I don't want them to misunderstand Elvis by watching "biographies" that claim to be true, when in fact they are loaded with glamorization and inaccuracies, all for ratings. Everyone I introduce to Elvis, I don't hide the fact that he did drugs or had a problem. I want them to know that because that's part of who Elvis was. But I want them to realize that those negative facts are just tiny grain of sand compared to all the greatness he resembles, all the love in his heart, all the good he did, everything he stood for and everything good that he is. You show me an Elvis movie that shows all this and truth.....and with the right actors, you got yourself a damn fine Elvis movie. Unfortunately, I have yet to see that. Movie makers are going to focus on the negative or focus on certain parts to get ratings.
