Would I be considered a "troll" for asking this? I mean it sounds stupid, but I'm curious.

A troll is someone who asks questions not for an answer but to start controversy.

"A "troll" is someone who intentionally and persistently posts inflammatory messages about sensitive topics to bait users into responding or provoke a confrontation. We also consider people to be trolls when they persistently misuse product features such as the ratings system to negatively target others."

An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone whose participation in an on-line community such as an on-line discussion forum is aimed at de-railing the purposes of said community. For example, someone who posts a rude message with the goal of baiting others into an emotional response is said to be a troll. [1] "Troll" is also used in a broader pejorative sense to question the good faith of any Internet user who has annoyed the person using the term

A bunch of prepubescent boys probably came up with it. It means an idiot goes around posting insulting, racist, or all around moronic questions and answers. They love this section because people already unintentionally post stupid stuff. It is very hard to tell the serious people from trolls sometimes.

Edit: Just found this link which should answer any of your other questions about trolls (and don't you just love the picture?):

Up until recently there was a group of people with the name Troll Patrol in their usernames.
They reported people just for fun to see how many they could get kicked out of Q&A.
Once school started, it pretty much stopped and Yahoo finally decided to not allow anyone with Troll Patrol in their names to register here.

No, you wouldn't be a troll for asking this. Trolls ask questions for attention. They like to start fights and annoy other users.

The first answerer nailed the definition of "troll", but there's another kind of special kind of troll called a "glorified troll." That is someone who acts paranoid and enters into long winded complaints every time they get a thumbs down or someone disagrees with them.
