ok I have an 85 jaguar XJ6 and I need to replace the ignition... thing... the part I have to buy is called the ignition lock assembly. But I have no idea what the part is that the ignition sets in. Does it set directly in the car? Because all I see now is a bunch of wires and it looks like if I get that part put on it will be hanging there. Do I need another part or what??? lol

The ignition lock is what you stick the key in to start the engine. This is the most common repair to the "ignition" system. Most ignition locks are similar and fit many different models and sometimes different manufacturers.

Not too hard to change yourself but if you don't have the tools or know-how then you can pay someone to do it for maybe $50-100 labor. Not sure what the part sells for on a Jag. Might be a special order part through the dealer or it might take a more common off the shelf lock.

The ignition switch is under the dash/column and this is what makes the electrical connections when you turn the key in the igition lock. Most are designed with what they call an ignition rack which is typically a cast metal piece that is connected to the ignition lock and when you turn the lock (key) the ignition rack pushes the ignition switch and things start happening.

Occasionally the ignition rack will break and has to be replaced. Typically a cheap part and cheap on labor, too, but more expensive to replace (due to labor) than the ignition lock. On a Jag it could cost an arm or a leg but I'd guess that it's very similar to most cars/trucks.

Good Luck!

The ignition lock assembly has the ignition switch attached to it. That's where the wires come from and will attach to the existing wires in your car when the assembly is replaced. I don't think you can buy the assembly without the switch (about $200) but you can buy the switch without buying the assembly (about $68) Check the following web sites. ...Good Luck...

It sounds like your talking about the steering column.
