Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory proposed that the id, ego, and superego are the 3 main components of the mind. Roughly, the id is our instincts and drives such as desire for food, sex, and pleasure. The ego is our conscience. The ego is our consciousness, reason, planning, and intellect, and tries to satisfy the person by compromising between the raw desires of the id and the conscience of the superego.
