We accidentally received exterior paint instead of interior for our dining room and kitchen. We didn't notice it until it was already painted. I know exterior painting is harmful to our health so I need to know how to fix it. Can we just paint over it or do we need to tear down the walls and put new sheet rock on there and start painting all over again. Please help!! I think its making my parents sick.

It is highly not recommended by professionals the difference between the two is exterior has a stronger content mold and mildew present in the paint which has a higher oder and is not good because the lack of ventilation in a room.So you would be breathing it in.Price difference i worked in retail and still do, there is nothing but a few dollars differnce if any verses price wise. Also the man bob vila said it the best their formulated for completly differnt things interior house paint is spatter resistant great scrubability durablitly when exterior house paint if fomulated to resist fadding the outside uv exspansion and contraction cold elements ,reduces mildew. Also even higher grade exterior paints will not last indoors longer than a low quality interior. If you would like to keep this color i would just prime over it will killz 2 or any general purpose primer and repaint. And exterior paints do include mildicide as well as interior paints(lower amounts) one brand for example is Perma White by Zinsser, other than that, there are additives to pour in.Good Luck.

I've sold ,mixed ,ordered, stocked, and inventoried Paint at the Hardware Store for a gazillion years. This is the first time I've heard it being harmful to any person on this earth. The difference between the two ,( interior and exterior ) is the amount of pigments added and Titanium added. The exterior paint has more, so it can endure the elements of being out doors. You can paint with an exterior paint inside the house if you want to. People don't because it costs more money than interior paint does. I wouldn't get all excited over it. Relax and enjoy your Christmas,no need to repaint or tear out your walls. Byee And by the way, mildicide is only added if you ask them to put it into the paint.

Exterior paint is not a whole lot different than interior, it contains a mildewcide and is more durable but I haven't heard that it is harmful to your health. You can prime and paint it again if it makes you feel better but it really isn't necessary. I would look at other environmental causes of the failing health issue. Mold, mildew, carbon monoxide gas build up are some of the things you should be more concerned with. Have your house inspected for these before you worry about paint causing these issues

This is the 1st time I hear exterior paint is harmful and interior paint is not.

Both are still paint but what makes you think they're so different?

Exterior paint is more expensive than interior paint, so exterior paints are used for interior job.

Simply ventilate the areas in question.
The harm, if any, is in the solvents, and it
has probably already dissipated.
If the exterior paint was water based,
acrylic or latex, it's harmless.
