Our baby has had a rash around her mouth. Tonight, I noticed a similar rash around my nipple and aerola. Last week we took her to the doctor about the rash and the ped. said it wasn't thrush because she didn't have the white patches in her mouth, that it was caused by teething and to give antibiotic cream. We have and it looks better but is not gone. I didn't notice my nipples and aerola until tonight when I was in the bathtub.
I have read online and they said:
-genetian violet- where do I get that?
-it said to put myconizole on my nipples- yet that would be ingested by the baby.
I do not have pain when I am breastfeeding at all. I just noticed the rash on my own nipples tonight. 2 weeks ago on was on a strong antibiotic for a kidney infection that came back after the first treatment failed. I wonder if this caused it.
We are calling the ped. on Wednesday morning. Do I need to see my own doctor as well to get my own meds?
Someone fill me in. I have never had this before

She has had a red rash around her mouth for a few weeks and nothing is clearing it up.
Now, I have it. She has no white patches at all.

I think I am going to take her in tomorrow to find out what is going on. She is on solids and has had no new foods- she eats pretty much what we eat at 16 months but despises eggs.
I am baffled. My rash looks just like hers. Today, she has it under her eyes??? They look like little pimples though.
For me with nursing, it doesn't hurt at all- no burning, nothing. That's why I question the thrush but have no idea what this could be.
Ughhh....
Thank you all...and any other ideas would be appreciated.

That doesn't sound like thrush because it is around the outside of the mouth, that actually sounds more like an allergic rash. I don't suppose you have started solids? Could you be sharing a food allergy? Or maybe an allergy to the antibiotic?
With the nipple cream, such as the APO which contain anti-fungals you are supposed to wipe of the excess (particularly if you add vitamin E, as babies can easily receive a toxic amount). Also 2 of the 3 commonly used antifungal cream ingredients also come in an oral(pill) form as well so they would be safe. Pretty sure it is miconozole is one, as is nystatin.
You can get genetian violet at any drugstore and walmart however I really do not recommend you use it. While it is commonly considered to be a natural treatment -it isn't and it has been linked to cancer. In the wrong dosage it can cause ulcers in the mouth as well.
Grapefruit seed extract is a natural based product, and in my experience it is highly effective. The only side effect I have found listed anywhere is that it can cause an allergic reaction in those allergic to grapefruit (duh). It can be taken orally, and applied topically. If you can afford both I recommend getting the pills and the liquid, however you can start with just the liquid. The active ingredient in GSE is approved for use to disinfect food processing machinery, so it is effective against many things including yeast and e. coli
Dosages:
Mom: 10-20 drops in liquid 2-3 times a day. Citrus juice masks the taste well, it is otherwise pretty gross *lol*.
Topically (in the mouth, diaper area, nipple, mom's vagina, etc) 10-20 drops per oz DISTILLED water (the chemicals in tap water may cause it to deteriorate over time). How frequently to put it on varies, however as yeast can regrow in as little as 90 minutes it is generally advisable to put it in the baby's mouth (with a q-tip) and on mom's nipples (I use a spray bottle to apply to nipples, diaper area, etc but it doesn't really matter) every hour and/or after each feed.
You MUST continue any anti-fungal treatment for at least 2 weeks after all symptoms have cleared up or it will just come back.
There is no reason not to use the GSE even if it isn't a yeast rash. Afterall you were just on antibiotics and as I said it is very low risk.

It sound like it could be the beginning stages of thrush. With you being on a antibiotic it could take awhile to show up in her mouth. Does her tongue look like it has a milky white coating on it? I would be careful not to put anything on your nipples without first checking with your doctor or with a pharmachist as you would'nt want her to ingest it.
If her doctor says its thrush, he or she could prescribe you something also so you would'nt have to pay another office visit for yourself. If it is thrush this is normal as most newborns get this. Don't panic or feel bad its part of the baby thing
Good luck to you and your baby. They are a joy to have

It could very well be thrush since it is contagious and believe it or not it could be some form of a yeast infection as well since you were on a strong antibiotics. Yeast infections can form anywhere on the body.
Chances are good the pediatrician can tell you what it is and may also be able to prescribe something for you. If not, then yes, it would be good to see your regular doctor to avoid further irritation

yes it does sound like it to me only because you said you also have it on you!
White patches inside the mouth and on the tongue that look like cottage cheese or milk curds. Thrush is often mistaken for milk or formula. The patches adhere to the mouth and tongue and cannot be easily wiped away. When rubbed, the patches may bleed.
Sore, red nipples in the nursing mother. Thrush may go unnoticed until the nursing mother notices sore, red nipples. She may also have a severe burning pain in the nipples during and after nursing

Thrush can be a mild infection that causes no symptoms. If symptoms develop, they may include the following.
If your child only has mild thrush, you may only need to clean bottle nipples and pacifiers regularly and massage the inside of your child's mouth with a clean moist cloth. If you are breast-feeding, you should clean your nipples with an antifungal medication, such as nystatin (Mycostatin). You should also dry your nipples after breast-feeding. Applying lanolin-containing body lotion may help relieve nipple soreness.
Massaging plain, unflavored yogurt that contains live cultures (check the label) around the inside of your child's mouth can also help cure thrush. Yogurt helps healthy bacteria grow in the mouth; these bacteria stop the growth of the yeast that causes thrush.

You can get Gentian Violet from a drug store or a health food store. You may have to ask the pharmacist, as it is not always out front. My son had thrush as a baby and I used the Gentian violet to paint his mouth. It was very effective, but stains something awful.

Thrush can affect mother and baby in different ways. The one time we had it, I was just a little itchy... she was in major pain with the white patches deep on her tounge... it took for me too make her so mad she cried and when she opened super wide it's when I saw waaay on the back of her tongue were the white patches.
Gentian violet is all we used. I found it at Walmart - about $3.
here are some other ideas: http://www.kellymom.com/newman/c-candida_protocol.html

Could be thrush.I would skip the Gentian violet for now because it is sssooo messy, even when you are being careful.
I would go to the store and by some Lotrimin AF (jock itch cream) and use that on your nipples, just wipe away before every feed. Her pediatrician should give you some nystatin that tastes yummy, unlike the yucky gentian violet (I tasted it, it's gross)
Also, go get some probiotics!!! It helps.....
one more thing, I bought my gentian violet off ebay.
Happy holidays to you too!
