LOL!!! This is not an offensive question at all I often ask that question myself. I think it's an effort to be distinctive, half the time the parents are aware the name is ridiculous and that people will wonder what the hell they were thinking. But it's preferable to being one of twenty girls named Tiffany in a class. When you have a name like Lakeisha or Shaherazat chances are there won't be anyone else with that name. I understand that because I went to school with girl that had the same first and last name as me and our grades were frequently mixed up. So a ghettofabulous name does set you apart from the crowd.

My name is Kyeisha which some people would deem ghetto. I don't think of my name as ghetto but unique because I didn't meet another Kyeisha for a long time. I never had trouble learning how to spell or say my name which my whole name is Kyeisha Ja'Juan Barnes. I have never had a problem getting a job nor has my name held me back from any opportunities in life. I believe the person makes the name not the other way around. For the most part its other peoples ignorance about the name that is the problem not the name its self.

They want to give their kids African names to remind them of their black heritage. It's like the Chinese having their Chinese name and not having a English name. But most of them are in China and don't speak English. I was born in Hong Kong, so that's different. So why the heck did I got a freakin British name? I ain't British, damn it! My parents must be on to something at the time of my birth and they are not telling me what it is.

Also trying not to be offensive ... ;)

It's true that some would claim these as somehow "African" names embracive of their heritage, but this is (unfortunately) not often the case. Something like "Tiqueshia," to use one of your examples, is not a name inherent to ANY language I'm familiar with. Simply a random jumble of letters and sounds strung together to form a completely meaningless build-a-name. Something like Abena or Eniola, on the other hand, WOULD be valid African names upholding their heritage!

Unfortunately, people who use these sort of meaningless, contrived creations -- in general ... it isn't just limited to African Americans, after all -- are generally lower-class, undereducated and more concerned with somehow seeming "unique" and "creative" than actually honoring said heritage or even considering how such a name will affect their CHILD for the rest of their life. Because it is, after all, an actual human being. Not simply some outward reflection of how much more "creative" these parents are than those. LOL

I laugh, but it really is a horrid shame. Poor babies! :(

I think you are doing your child a disservice by giving them some made up sounding ghetto name. Even if the kid gets a PhD, the name on the resume will look stupid.

I'm black so i guess i can say this. Some black people are so stubborn and ghetto and believe in "white" names and "black names'' . I personally think that some names are so stupid and retarded. People who live in the hood can not name their kids Bradford, John, or Alex because they will get made fun of for having a "white name". I used to get made fun of because my name is Courtney. Which is a predominately white name. I've only met one other black Courtney. I don't think I've ever known a black John or Alex.
It's mainly a mindset. But there's no rule. Some black people choose to screw up their kids in the future by naming them ghetto names. It's already hard for black people to get hired sometimes. It just the truth. So why have an employer not even interview you because they automatically know that you're black cause of your name. For example whose going to hire Tyqueesha Jones? I preferred normal names and i have names picked out for my children in the future but they are no where near ghetto. Another point, when some black people make up names they are terrible. But when other races make up names they're not that bad. For example if you saw the name Apple Carmichael - would you think white or black?

Some of those names are African. Tanisha is an African name, as far as I know. Others are just creative.
