Teens are moody for many reasons that are 100% normal but being sad, apathetic, lethargic, and possibly suicidal for more then a few hours a day and for more then a few days in a row means that they should seek treatment.

So many teens get blown off by the people that should be the first to spot the depression because it is attributed to the general "Teen Moodyness" and that is distrubing!!

Feeling like $#!t for a majority of the time for at least a week is the #1 way to know if it is actual depression...

When you look for TEEN depression teens usually like to keep to themselves and are always upset and may have thoughts of suicide. Teen depression should be taken care of quickly so that it can be helped out. Some times teens are depressed from getting divorced parents or even losing their friends and boy/girl friends. Teen depression can be a serious thing.

umm I'm pretty sure depression is depression, doesn't matter if your a teen or adult...However, when I was a teen, I was depressed but didn't really know myself, if you know what I mean...Like, I didn't really know what depression was until I went to college and started seeing a therapist...If you're depressed, you'll probably act out by partying or getting into trouble, fighting with your parents, etc...and you feel empty and really sad inside...nothing really satisfies you, even when you're out with your friends. That's how I felt throughout high school.

Well, a couple of years ago, when I was a teenager, this is what it was like for me:

1. I slept excessively. Sleeping helped dull whatever it was that I was feeling at the time. I just didn't want to deal with real life.
2. Mood swings. I don't mean minor mood swings, I mean one second you're crying, and the next second you want to punch a class mate in the face.
3. Feelings of hopelessness.
4. Thoughts of suicide.
5. The things that you used to enjoy doing- sports, being with friends whatever- just don't appeal to you anymore.

Those are a couple. But if this is what you're going through, I sympathize completely.

Also, the real kicker is when you feel these feelings of hopelessness for no good reason.

When I was a teenager, about 6 years ago, I remember I thought I was depressed because I mimiced what my mom did when she was depressed. I became withdrawn. I cried a lot. Stayed away from friends and quit school activities that previously made me happy. I also would binge eat late at night when my mom was asleep. This was all around the time I attempted suicide.

a few things you can look out for:
he shuns the normal crowd he hangs out with
he seems forgetful or absent minded
he ask someone about death or talks about suicide
he talks different - loud to quiet or vice versa
he turns to drugs, smoking - if he is not a user in the first place

if you feel like you have nothing to live for
the world is against you
your all alone in the world
you want to slit your wrists
you cry at the thought of tomorrow
you pray you never wake up
