That all depends on which carrier you have. T-Mobile and AT&T use SIM cards. They are the "brains" if you will of the phone. When your service is activated, the information about your telephone # and the type of calling/data plan you have are stored on that card. You can also store your address book on the SIM card. To change phones on the same carrier, it's as simple as taking the card out of one phone and putting it in the other. You may not be able to do that between carriers but it costs nothing to try.
Verizon and Sprint do not use SIM cards. The information regarding your phone # and services are programmed onto the phone by the provider. Switching phones is not as simple and requires activation by the provider.

If you dont have a sim card in the phone you currently use, you are mosty likely on different technology than her provider. (CMDA vs GSM) If you guys had the same technolgy, reguardless of providers, you could get the phone "unlocked", meaning usable with any provider that has the same technolgy.

Phones are Prioporitory to what ever service its marked by. You can't get one phone to work on another provider, but you can switch if they are both made by the same provider.

You would have to ask your providor if they can or not some doand some do not, the sim card would be the little piece under the battery where you can put into other phones when you switch them.

Some phones have a removable SIM card. like tmoble (which I have). So if I a get a new phone, I save all my contacts to the sim card, swap it to my new phone, then load them. New phone all set with all my numbers & stuff..........
