well if you dont like them together, how about a different middle name?

I like Colten, but I don't really care for them together. Maybe you could try something like
Colten James.
Pairing an interesting first name and a traditional middle name usually works great. It gives him a choice when he grows up whether he wants to go by his unique first name or his traditional middle name.

its a bit of a mouthfull for the child, colten will be shortened to colt which is the name given to a horse, dont think you would like that
Kayne sounds okay on its own if you are going for something along that line you need a very short middle name

It's too close to "candy cane" for me. When I first saw the name, I thought that's what it was at first glance.
I love Colten. I love Kayne. I just don't like the two together.

no, it is way too serious. they sound like 2 last names. Colten reminds me of Colt 45 and Kayne reminds me of the Virginia politician, or the movie Citizen Kane.
maybe Collin instead of Colten?

Sounds like an action movie character, and like you are trying way too hard to be different and therefore it sounds really tacky and not the least bit creative. Sorry. How about something more meaningful, such as a name from your family tree, which your son can be proud of when he grows up?
