The state of Alabama is just like any other state as far as respect. It depends of the nature of the respect. There are some downsides or upsides to this issue. Remember to received respect it has to get respect. So in my opinon, Alabama is just like any other state and matters what the issue of the respect.

It's a southern state, of course not. I am from the south, born and raised.

The only state that deserves any respect in the south is Florida and that's a close call. I was born in Florida, raised in Louisiana, spent time in Alabama and currently live in Georgia. I think I am qualified to say the majority of the southern states still need to earn respect. The east coast southern states as you move more north get a little respect.

And to answer your question, how can you respect states that still practice segregation? Yes, it still happens just "legally" now. Start with school zoning!

I don't think it's an issue of respect; I just don't think anyone else in the country - unless they have some connection to the state - ever has any reason to even think about Alabama.

Yes. Most Southern states don't get a lot of respect. The South has a bad reputation and has been misunderstood for a long time.

...because it was a cradle of slavery, segregation, and anti-homosexual hatred. It is also one of the poorest states in the union, and one of the least educated. They even treated Forrest Gump like crap. What is to respect?

Oh yeah, who could forget how classy they were when Jeff Gordon won that race in Talladega. I'm not a big fan of his, but you saw the typical Alabama sportsmanship there when they started throwing bottles onto the track.

I wouldn't be caught there dead.

Alabama has had more than its share of racist occurrences. It is sad that the state has to be like that, but the fact of the matter is that some of the most prejudiced people in the country live in Alabama, and because of that the good people in the state has to bear the stigma.

It is a state. And what I think make a state respectables are its city and attractions. Big City, Big business, Big Celebrities, Big Beaches equal a respectable state. I can't really recall anything about Alabama right now. But I am sure it should have something. I guess

I think so, because there is so much history here of slavery and everyone being racist. And that is not entirely true.
I dont know the reason why, but everyone thinks that we marry our brothers and cousins. because it is totally false, I have in lived in Alabama for 40 yrs and I have never heard of any of this happening.
Alabama does have alot of rednecks, and alot of them give rednecks a bad reputation, but there there are rednecks everywhere in the U.S. Its just like, I know alot of people that give humans a bad reputation.
