i am going to do a fishless cycle and I got some ammonia. It says it has ammonia hydroxide and surfactact. Some people say that this is fine and others say it isn't. bottom line is when I shake it it foams. Is surfactant okay?

You should only use 100% ammonia, without any surfactants, fragrances, or other chemicals added to it. This type of ammonia is meant for cleaning/laundry. It's the surfactant is what causing the foaming.

I personally perfer to use fish food (usually shrimp pellets) because I have these on hand anyway, and all ingredients in the pellets would be fish-safe.
