Your nipples have probably become very dry. Although, this is painful, it is natural and occurs often. Put Lansinoh cream on your nipples a bit before and after feeding. It is harmless and tasteless to the baby. It is wonderful to see that you are nursing your baby. There are so many benefits from it for you and your baby. I am a first time mom and I nursed my son for 11 months 29 days! ( I was determined to ween him by 1 yr old). He is now 15 months. He has no allergies, he has never had an ear infection, diaper rash, or high fever. He has 10 teeth and he cut all of them without a sleepless night. Many say that I am blessed and I agree, however, I attribute his health to breast milk. Good for you!!! You are a fabulous Mommy.

Sounds like thrush! It's really painful; I just thought I was done fighting it and it's back again. Try rinsing your nipples with half vinegar and half water and letting them air dry. Also get some Gentian Violet, apply it to your nipples and nurse your daughter; that way it treats both of you. Some nipple creams can help with the pain, but not with thrush.
If you want to see your Dr, beware of Nystatin; it's failure rate is over 50%. Micozanole is a better option, and if all else fails, take oral Diflucan (flucozanole) for at least 2 weeks past when the symptoms disappear.
Thrush is really hard to treat, and can spread to the milk ducts if left untreated long enough.
Good luck, I'm in the same mess!

Has your baby had thrush recently? This is a yeast infection in the mouth and can cause symptoms like those you are describing. Leave your nipples open to the air as much as possible. If your baby does have a yeast infection , she will need medicine from a doctor and so will you.

Try to put some lansonhol cream. (i think that's how you spell it) it will help with the sore and cracked nipples. It's safe for the baby as well.. if you put it on, and then breast feed a little later...

It's possible that you're nipples are cracking for the same reason people's lips crack during the winter, dry air and frequent surface moisture combined. Talk to your doctor.

Cracked doesn't mean thrush. I'd try the lansinoh cream (see site below). I'd also call your local La Leche League for more information.
