He presides over the meetings. That means he can control who gets to speak, what votes are taken and things like that. His most powerful duty is to vote in case of a tie. Otherwise he does not vote.

President=ONe who presides. Moderator and has to cast the deciding vote if there is a tie. Remember there are 100 Senators, not unreal that there could be a tie vote.
