More money was made from cotton than most any other crop in the south. Everybody needed it to make flour sacks, clothes, sheets, blankets and other goods from it since it was so cheap compared to the other fabrics. Make some string from cotton by pulling it apart to a degree and spin it between your palms, keeping the amount of fiber fairly constant along the 'string'. You can then use the string to crochet with, weave, or knit. You could also make a yarn out of it then use the yarn to make something, just don't spin it as tightly.

Cotton was the main money crop grown in the South. It could be considered white gold. That's why the plantation owners were so wealthy. What's your project? Are you old enough to sew? Make a garment.

Cotton was king of the South because the British (with their booming textile industry) paid very well for it.
