Actually, it doesn't. It only appears that way in the USA. And don't tell the cop on the beat, the nurse on the graveyard shift, the snowplow operator, the grunt humping a pack in the sandbox (Iraq), the CIA analyst doping out the newest threat to your security, the technician monitoring radio communications for your 911 center, and all moms with sick children that the world's supposed to be shut down today...not unless you want to hear one really, really loud raspberry....

It's a good reason to stop the rat race for a while and spend time with family and think of the less fortunate. Christmas is a time to look forward to and to make happy memories for kids.

I worked every Christmas until I got married. Then my attitude changed.

I don't think the whole world shuts down, but in America, most people celebrate Christmas. Therefore, many stores and restaurants close so the employees can celebrate with their family and/or friends.

People would rather spend time with their families on Christmas than work.

oh i feel so bad for you, no one should have to work on Christmas. I remember when the stores were all closed and we all did fine. Maybe next year you'll have enough seniority to not have to work.Happy New Year!!!!

To have an entire day to spend with friends and family on a special occasion, instead of just half a day or so just like any other day.... (well is it your choice to go to work...?)

So people can be with family or friends or just rest or spend the day however they want.
